Head Boy’s Blog

Happiness. What makes us happy? This is the question I asked myself prior to Mr. Fisher’s assembly on Monday morning and began questioning why we all experience the emotion of joy and happiness. I stumbled across this quote from the Dalai Lama: “Happiness is not ready made. It comes from your own actions”
This quote made me think back to times where I have been at my happiest. Where perhaps I have won a tennis tournament, the moment I became Head Boy or when I’m eating Christmas dinner with my family. Each of the moments has a connection: it was when I had achieved something or when I was spending time with the people I love. Better still being able to share something that I have achieved with those close to me. At the time I reel through these memories I feel a beaming smile draw itself from one side of my face to another. But it also makes me think about the times where I haven’t tried my best and I’ve let myself down or where I’ve had an argument with someone I love. I equally feel the hurt and the pain of these moments. We can’t be happy all the time and we don’t always get things right, but more importantly it’s up to each of us to give ourselves the best opportunity for happiness.
This got me wondering and thinking about a blueprint for Happiness and from my own experiences it couldn’t be any clearer. It comes from not only achieving but striving to achieve and succeeding. In each of the moments I have achieved something I take happiness not only from the reward or the end goal, but also from the process. Surrounding myself with family and friends is always key, they are the people that will be there through the highs and lows. They will not only celebrate your successes but also pick you up when you fall. Over the next half term we will all have these experiences but it is important not to be beaten by things that don’t go your way and instead turn them into a triumph.
