Music Provision and Events
Music plays an important role throughout Sherfield School, whether pupils are learning as part of their day-to-day curriculum or taking up instruments or joining in with the many choirs, bands, orchestras, and groups. All pupils in the Pre-Prep and Prep take part in choir.
Music lessons with peripatetic teachers are currently available for piano, electric and acoustic guitar, bass guitar, voice, drums, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone. If your child would like to take up a different instrument, please contact the Music Department through Main Reception on 01256 884 800.
Music Scholars
Meet our music scholars...
Polly - Year 11

Hi,I'm Polly. I have recently finished my grade 3 violin exam with a distinction. I also play eight other instruments and have previously done grades in them all. These include piano, ukulele, guitar, violin and singing. I have always enjoyed music and performing because it helps to create a community, and I have many great memories of past shows. I am also now part of a large string orchestra outside of school. This helps me build skills like balancing sounds and syncopation practice. I have also been part of the school choir for 3 years and have arranged a piece that was performed in a concert. The choir is good for me because it develops my ability to mix my sound and create harmonies. Harmonies are definitely where I shine the most. Most recently, I have been working with the younger choir and helping them see the beauty of singing the harmony and how you can play around with the piece's key by adding other parts. I frequently perform in concerts both in and out of school, and it is my safe space where I can always be myself and have fun. Since joining music scholars in year 7, I have developed my theory in both grades 4 and 5. I have also improved my composition and arranging skills, like creating backing for a short film and messing around with a 12-tone row (using every note on the keyboard from middle C to B).
Harry - Year 11

Hello, my name is Harry! I can play roughly seven instruments. Some of these include Grade 6 guitar, Grade 4 piano, Grade 4 singing, drums, ukulele, bass guitar, and maybe even the kazoo if that counts!. I wasn’t even a 1-year-old when I attended my first music class. I was asleep half the time, but it helped me later in my musical career with theory work, which I do on Friday break times with Seb and Polly. At this point in my musical career, I genuinely can’t single out my favourite performance, as there have been so many. My favourite concert, though, is undoubtedly the rock and pop concert! I haven’t missed a single one since year 3; even during COVID, I still performed! I love music because it really brings the phrase “Music is a universal language” to reality! I wanted to become a music scholar because I believe that once you have a certain talent for something, you should always try to push yourself and try to get better. Since becoming a music scholar, my theory work has improved, and I’ve developed a new-found passion for composition; my confidence levels have also certainly improved while performing and presenting. I’m in various bands and duets at the moment, and after calculations, I've discovered that I have won over half of the battle of the bands that I’ve competed in, 66.6% of them, to be exact! Some of my musical achievements are, of course, becoming a music scholar, winning battle of the bands (multiple times), passing my preliminary piano exam with a distinction at the age of 5, and passing my grade 6 guitar with (a very close) yet still a distinction!
Seb - Year 9

Hi, I'm Seb; I started playing the piano when I was five years old. I can confidently play at a grade 5 level, although I don't currently have a certain grade. I also sing, but I have only just started recently. I can play some guitar but don't do lessons or a grade. I have been able to pick up many different instruments in the past and figure out some tunes myself. These instruments include, drums, guitar and as i said before I have just started to do singing. I am currently taking my grade 2 singing exam so wish me luck! I have performed in many Sherfield concerts, such as the Autumn concert and Battle of the Bands (my band has won two years in a row). You also may have seen me presenting it this year, which was great! I am extremely grateful that I am now officially a music scholar! It's a great opportunity I will take full advantage of.
