No matter when in school it occurs, academic failure can have negative consequences for students. Academic success, on the other hand, can empower students to achieve outstanding results in their studies and future careers.
Many scientists have tried to identify the predictors of academic success and ‘academic self-efficacy’ – the belief in one’s own ability to reach an academic goal - has been shown to be a strong predictor of academic success.
So, students’ perceptions of their ability to successfully master curriculum areas is important. In addition, their ability to plan and organise their academic activities and environment so that they are ready and motivated for learning is crucial. Students who are organised, precise, tenacious and persistent and who have high levels of self-esteem tend to believe they are capable of mastering their studies. Therefore, they have higher levels of self-efficacy and are likely to perform better in an academic setting.
As a Sherfield community, our collective responsibility is to support all our learners in engaging in positive, high quality learning experiences and social interactions. Through continuous reinforcement and achievement of success, our students will grow, flourish and excel in so many ways. Whilst our new Ad Vitam Paramus Diploma is in its infancy, it does provide further opportunities for students to participate in engaging, enriching experiences which will deepen their learning and support their wider development. Coupled with a strong academic core achieved through the day-to-day curricular and co-curricular opportunities, students will undoubtedly benefit and experience greater levels of success.
The start of the Autumn term has been very positive and I am delighted with how well our students have settled back into Sherfield life. It is also really pleasing to see so many parents volunteering to get involved in the Friends of Sherfield group. Thank you once again for your continued support and as ever, please get in touch with any feedback or suggestions.
