Welcome back and a glorious and very Happy New Year from all of us at Sherfield!
At this time of year many of us are scrambling around challenging ourselves with new resolutions which inevitably become very hard to keep and often fall by the wayside very quickly early in January. This may just be me, but I have to admit, I have failed dismally on every occasion I have tried to set a very well-intended resolution!
The start of the calendar year though is always a good time to reflect on what it is important to us and to consider what the future might look like for all of us. As we look forward to the days becoming longer and with the Spring and Summer ahead, there is an air of optimism and positivity.
Early in March we are hosting a Year 13 6th form conference at Sherfield with students from Farlington School and Ealing Independent College joining us. This week we have been discussing the focus for the day as we support students in preparing for their next step to university and future life. When considering the content and design of the day, the theme ‘A glimpse into the future’ springs to mind as we challenge students to think beyond university and into the future. What will that future look like and how will it alter from the here and now? Interestingly when the current Year 13 students reach my ripe old age, we will be in the 2050s! What a frightening and very sobering admission!
In terms of generational thinking, I believe our current students are categorized as Generation Z, the first generation of adults who have grown up in a fully interconnected, technologically advanced world, which becomes seemingly smaller every day. More equipped with an environmental conscience and the ability to influence others through immediate instantaneous communication, they have access to almost everything at the touch of a button. They will decide the future direction of our society and have the greatest impact on the world we live in.
Despite all the rapid technological developments and advancements in so many growth sectors, there are a few things that remain constant and are important for us to always remember, whether we are in the 2020s or indeed the 2050s and beyond: To my mind, these include the importance and influence of family (community), health and education which provide the foundations for us all to build upon.
Celebrating Christmas with family and friends once again was a joy and this year more than ever I’m sure we all recognize the need to be thankful for this opportunity. Likewise, a focus on health, both physically and mentally is so important and essential for all. This is often forgotten as we become embroiled in the day to day hectic lives we all lead. Thirdly, the constant of securing an excellent educational experience is so critical for all of our students as they develop into well-rounded, thoughtful, independent and socially aware young adults, empowered and responsible decision makers ready to take on the world with strong ethical values and a positive moral compass.
Whatever challenges lay ahead this year and in the future, we should continue forward with a positive mindset and look forward to a bright future whichever generation we live in. I for one am certainly optimistic about 2022 and look forward to another wonderful and action packed year at Sherfield.
Once again, thank you for your continued support.
