What a wonderful time of year Christmas is! With so much fun, laughter and joy leading into the festive break, followed by the enjoyment of families and friends spending quality time together. The spirit of Christmas is a truly fabulous time of year. It’s a time when we share experiences, stories, time and gifts, giving to others and enjoying the opportunity to be together.
Well, certainly for most people this is the case, but for others Christmas presents its own challenges. Sadly, Christmas festivities are not the case for everyone and so it is important for us to remember those who may be alone at this time of year, who may for example have lost loved ones, or may not be in the position to celebrate in the way that we possibly do. So, what can we do aside from remembering the needs of others? Well, we can still offer gifts, support and time. It may be a neighbour who is living on their own and has no family around or it may be contributing to a charitable organisation who offer support to those in need, such as those who are homeless. Imagine the delight on the face of someone feeling alone and vulnerable if you were to take an interest and offer support, particularly at this time of year.
Reflecting on the build-up to Christmas and whole experience, there is so much generosity, care and good humour. So, why does this need to be bottled into this one time of year? Why doesn’t this happen all the time, at every stage in the calendar year?
Part of our role at Sherfield is establishing our community spirit and developing positive, caring and well-rounded young people ready to make an active contribution to society, able to lead us into the future. In order to accomplish this, we rely on the whole school ecosystem working together in a collaborative partnership. Our school has its own ecosystem of opportunity, developing important connections and relationships which build lifelong bonds and support networks. These connections give life, vitality and energy, generating a heart and a soul within our school. Today, as always we see this in action as the whole school community joins together and celebrates with a fabulous performance from our students.
We are truly blessed with fantastic students, as we well know, but also with incredibly supportive parents who trust us implicitly and give us the licence and the responsibility to educate our young people. Within this, I would very much like to thank all the parents who have been involved with Friends of Sherfield once again this year. They are an incredibly committed community of parents, who just ‘get things done!’. Our series of events just keep getting bigger and bigger, as you will have noticed with the incredible Fireworks night and Christmas Fayre recently. Volunteering and giving up time to generate community and give back to our ecosystem is so appreciated and it would be remiss of me not to thank each and every individual who has contributed in some way. Moreover, to the committee members who work so well together and make it all happen.
Finally, I’d like to say a special thanks to all members of our community: students, parents and staff who make every day special at Sherfield. I wish you all a wonderful, restful and festive Christmas break and I look forward to welcoming you back in the New Year!
