On driving through the gates of Roche Court it felt like entering another world. Enormous bronze sculptures towered above us surrounded by the beautiful rolling hills and stunning landscape. The owner of Roche Court left her London gallery many years ago and set up this unique facility in Salisbury, giving contemporary sculpture a green and spacious backdrop from which to be displayed.
The children split into two groups and set off on a creative adventure, every turn revealed a new and exciting artwork which thrilled and inspired them to respond by drawing what they saw and engage in critical analysis of the creations they viewed. New methods, ideas and terminology were covered and the children excelled in their response to the group leader’s questions, prompting her to remark on the maturity of their insightful comments and ability to discuss and express their ideas amongst each other.
As you can see from these images, the experience lends itself to mindfulness approaches we are exploring at Sherfield school, delivered through art.
