Throughout this half term, the Year 2 students have been learning all about Florence Nightingale. Often heralded as the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale was best known for serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, and later for founding the first secular nursing school in the world at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London. She was also a social reformer and statistician, pioneering new ways to present complex data effectively. All-in-all, a thoroughly inspiring person!
In learning more about Florence Nightingale, the Year 2s considered all that she did to change nursing for the better, and in their Design Technology class, they created hospital scenes in a shoebox. Their diorama had to include a nurse/doctor, a bed and another free-standing item. The children practiced creating 3D items which could stand upright, and they made a fantastic job!
Year 2 were also fortunate to welcome Sherfield parent Alison, who talked about her life as a nurse. Alison shared her experiences of working as a medic with the RAF at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan. The children spend time discussing what modern field hospitals are like, compared to Florence’s time in Crimea. They also saw some of the equipment that Alison currently uses in her job to look after people’s hearts. Thank you so much to Alison for creating such a brilliant visit and demonstrating the importance and incredible variety of nursing roles.
