Thursday 3rd March was World Book Day 2022 and at Sherfield we celebrated to the max, with a plethora of fun, literature-themed activities, competitions and costumes. (You can watch the highlights reel here).
Classes in Junior Prep (from Reception to Year 4) joined forces throughout the morning and together rotated around a carousel of activities including celebrating Julia Donaldson books with collage art, story sharing and colouring; making a scary sea monster and shell designs based on Sue Hendra’s books; creating a Cat in the Hat and hot air balloon inspired by Dr. Seuss; crafting dreamcatchers and dream bottles; listening to MC Grammar’s Rap and completing a David Walliams Scavenger Character Hunt. Junior Prep also worked together to decorate their classroom doors with their specific literary theme, as part of a competition which was judged by Head of Prep Mrs. Bouwer.
Senior Prep had their own raft of activities. Year 7 were set a DT Challenge to design an outfit for their favourite book character using bin bags, paper, masking tape and string! While the Year 8’s enjoyed a Sherlock Holmes style murder case – they had to get their best detective hats on to solve the mystery of the body in the Old Library.
At morning break, the House Competition took a couture turn, with a costume catwalk competition in the Courtyard Studio for staff and students alike. You can watch the video of them strutting their stuff, here. At lunchtime the competition continued with a tricky Literature Quiz to see if students knew their Hobbits from their Hungry Caterpillars.
World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. The first UK event was held in 1997, and over the last 25 years, the event has grown year-on-year and it is now marked in over 100 countries around the globe. While the day is synonymous with fun and fancy dress, the aim is to raise awareness of reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success - more than their family circumstances, their parent’s educational background or their income. The importance of reading, creativity and expression is fundamental to the Sherfield experience, and we continue to embrace World Book Day with gusto - bring on WBD 2023!
