I was invited to take part in the United Kingdom Maths Trust Summer School over the summer and spent a week at Woodhouse Grove School in Leeds. We looked at lots of different topics in maths which are not part of the normal school curriculum. We first studied Euclid’s Algorithm which finds the highest common factor of two large numbers, we then applied this to worded questions. We also had Geometry workshops where we had to see how to fit a circle onto 3 points of a triangle and how to fit a circle inside a triangle. In the afternoon we worked on more topic based subjects like binary code, algebraic tiling, 3D geometry and networking. We also learnt how to write out our proofs properly; the proof that we used was proof by induction which is part of the A Level Maths course. There were activities in the evening, most of them involving maths! There was a mathemagical show and bowling. We watched a film about the female mathematician who worked out how to put a man into space and on the final night there was a talent show. At the end we were given a t-shirt and a water bottle to remember our week by. I had a really great time, made lots of new friends and hope to go back as a Senior Team leader next year.
