The Junior Boys and Girls Triathlon Teams from Sherfield School have been crowned the National Champions.
Twelve Sherfield students in Years 5 and 6 took part in the Independent Schools Association (ISA) 2021 National Junior Triathlon on Friday 1st October. The time-trail event, held at Woodlands School, Hutton Manor in Essex, involved a 90m swim, followed by an 800m cycle and an 800m run.
The race began with the students, all aged between 9 and 11 years, setting off one at a time and 10 seconds apart in the pool. Following the swim, they had to dash into a marquee (the first transition area) to put their trainers and helmets on before running appropriately 150m to where the bikes were waiting for them. The bike ride was off road and quite a challenge! Following the cycle, they racked their bikes and removed their helmets before tackling the 800m run over an uneven course.
The students gave it their all and were exhausted when they crossed the finish line, but this didn't stop them cheering for all their teammates as they crossed the line.
Only five of the Sherfield team members had taken part in a triathlon before and some had little experience of a multi-sport event. Despite this, both the boys team (Guy, Will, Lachlan and Henry) and girls team (Amelie, Darcy, Darina and Annabelle) won Gold, and were crowned National Junior Triathlon Champions. Out of the 94 girls and 97 boys competing in the event, Sherfield students, Amelie and Guy also won Silver medals and Will secured Bronze medal in the individual category.
Nick Brain, Headmaster is proud of the student’s achievements. He commented: ‘We are absolutely delighted with our results at the ISA Triathlon and immensely proud of our students. Dedication and team work are at the heart of the Sherfield ethos and the achievements of our students are testament to their outstanding commitment and hard work.’
