Sherfield Hosts Regional Prep Schools Debating Competition
Our home teams and Mr Ferrier did a super job hosting the 8th Annual Prep School Debating Competition just before the half term break.
The standard of debate in the final was excellent from both teams and offered a unique perspective of potential extra-terrestrial living.
Motion for final: This house wants to live on the moon!
”This was an excellent competition this year with five schools, ten teams and 21 debates during the day. Each of these speakers had at least four debates during the day. It is designed for novice speakers of 11 to 13 years and we get a terrific development of all the speakers during the day as they compete with and learn from each other. The standard this year was the highest we have seen. The debates were thoughtfully and clearly argued with clarity, poise and style. Public speaking is a valuable life skill and these young people have now lost most of the fear of standing up to speak in front of others. An additional benefit is the self-development opportunity it offers older Sherfield pupils who organize the competition and chair the debates on the day” Derek Ferrier, Sherfield School debating organiser.
