There was a great buzz about the Sherfield English Department last week!
On Thursday 7th October, it was National Poetry Day. Founded in 1994 by the Forwards Arts Foundation, a charity that promotes public knowledge and enjoyment of poetry. National Poetry Day aims to give people the confidence to create and communicate; to celebrate poetry in all its forms and increase its audience.
To mark the national celebration, Sherfield students were encouraged to write poems of their own. We had sonnets and acrostics, odes and book spine poems! In class, the students had pondered the question ‘What is poetry?’ and speculated about the links between it and music lyrics. Monday’s Senior assembly furthered that exploration and the students had the opportunity to discover their favourite song lyrics- as Shakespeare would have written them!
Tuesday’s House Competition continued the poetry theme with a recital. Students and staff listened to the works of pupils from year 4 to year 10, before voting for their favourites. All poems were excellent, and the students who performed showed bravery and skill. You can watch a clip of the performers here.
We were also thrilled to discover that a phenomenal 30 Sherfield students from Years 8 and 9 have had their 100 words ‘Chiller’ stories selected to be published by the Young Writers Association. We are very impressed and immensely proud of the young, growing talent of our students.
