The Hundred Years War, World War One and the Napoleonic War all come to Sherfield School.
On Thursday the History Squad came to the school to talk, demonstrate and generally enthuse Years 6, 7 and 8 about the glorious and most definitely gorier aspects of history. Mr Hicks starting with his first character, a corporal in Kitchener’s army. The children got to try on the uniform and hold the various bits of the kit. We came to appreciate what life was like for an ordinary soldier in the trenches of World War One and how heavy the kit was. Afterwards we were guided through the very gory topic of medieval medicine, using a very life like head of Henry V, accompanied by blood (fake) and medieval torture medical surgical tools. We then were treated to an impressive archery display, recreating the battle of Agincourt, obviously without the piles of French dead. After lunch we changed centuries again and joined the army of the Duke of Wellington during the Napoleonic War. The children were then allowed to hold cannon and musket balls and treated to a musket display. A fantastic day was had by all and proving that history is very much alive at Sherfield!
