On Tuesday 11th January, Sherfield’s Year 1 kickstarted their new topic for the term: ‘Year 1 to the Rescue.’ The launch was celebrated with ‘Grace Darling Day’ and the students stepped back in time to the Victorian era.
Pupils spent the day exploring the life of Grace Darling, a lighthouse keeper’s daughter who became a national hero for her part in rescuing passengers of a wrecked ship in 1838.
Students heard all about how, in the early hours of 7th September, Grace was looking from an upstairs window and spotted the wreck and survivors of the Forfarshire which had hit rocks just off the coast of Northumberland. Grace and her father braved the strong seas in a rowing boat to help rescue survivors and were both awarded the Silver Medal for Bravery from the organisation that later became the RNLI.
Year 1 worked creatively through this fascinating story, using a range of drama-based activities, which were led by external company ‘One Day Creative.’ As well as learning a lot about history, bravery and what it takes to be a hero, they all had a blast!
