Years 8 and 9 had a great experience learning about how the war on the Western Front was fought and seeing how the trench system worked, descending into a huge crater hitherto closed to the public and walking in the footsteps of soldiers who fought on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. They also learned the stories of individual soldiers buried and remembered in some of the vast cemeteries that lie throughout the region, and thanks to the expert guide some of them were even able to find the names of family members who fell in battle. It was truly memorable experience that the students will never forget.
