The New Director of Teaching & Learning at Sherfield School
We are delighted to announce the appointment of a Director of Teaching & Learning at Sherfield School.
Chris James-Roll will join us in September to stimulate and drive exciting initiatives in learning at Sherfield. Chris is a graduate of Liverpool University where he studied Physics and Information Technology. After university he joined a graduate recruitment programme in the City, eventually joining an investment consultancy where he became the Training and Compliance Director. This is where Chris first identified his love of learning.
Chris went on to set up his own successful financial services consultancy in 2006, specialising in investment and pension advice to corporate and high net worth clients. In 2009 he sold the practice to realise his passion for teaching.
Academically, Chris’ first love is science and he completed his PGCE at Roehampton University in Secondary Science. He has worked in both the state and independent sector and joins Sherfield School from a large state school on the Isle of Wight where he was Director of Learning. He appreciates the strengths of both sectors and brings to Sherfield a wealth of experience in both education and commerce.
Chris is passionate about Teaching and Learning, in particular, identifying ways in which pupils can develop as independent, resilient learners ready to take on the challenges of a 21st Century global society. Chris was particularly impressed by the thoughtfulness, maturity and energy of the pupils at Sherfield supported by the ambitious and passionate team of staff; he is looking forward to making a real impact on the learning of our pupils.
Chris said:
“As a scientist I am naturally curious about everything around us. I want to instil in pupils a love of discovery and give them the skills to develop confidence through exploration, collaborative work and independent thought. I enjoyed my interview lesson with Year 10 where I felt a connection with their own love for learning and team work. I am truly excited to be joining the staff at Sherfield to drive forward independent learning through initiatives such as STEAM which brings together the Arts, Science, Technology and Maths as well as developing deep learning and critical thinking opportunities across all the departments. “
Outside of the classroom, Chris enjoys most sports including tennis, swimming, running and coaching rugby as well as scuba diving and restoring classic cars. Chris will be joined at Sherfield by his wife, Jessica and two children, Arthur and Tabitha.
