Last weekend 23 Sherfield pupils competed at the National Schools Biathlon Championships at Bath University, which is the home of British Pentathlon. The boys had their races on Saturday and the girls on Sunday.
Luke W in Year 5 went into the competition ranked in 2nd place following the qualification competitions. He had his swim first and pulled out a personal best to record the fastest time of the day for Year 5s 50m. He then went on to record another personal best in the 800m run recording the 7th fastest time for year 5 boys. This was enough to earn him enough points to finish the competition on top of the podium as the 2024 champion – the first Sherfield pupil to achieve this. Luke also scored the highest points out of all the Sherfield pupils.
The Year 7 boys team of Lachlan H, Caiden G and Alex D missed out on their chance to stand on the podium due to scoring errors on the day, but it has now been confirmed that they have a silver team medal on the way to school for them. Our other team results were:
Year 4 boys – 7th
Year 6 boys – 5th
Year 8 boys – 4th
Other notable performances were Hugh G (Year 4) finishing individually in 8th place and producing a lightning fast 400m run to record the 4th fastest time of the day and a personal best. He also recorded the second most points out of all the Sherfield pupils. Caiden G recorded the 6th fastest time in the Year 7 boys 800m run and Uri S the 8th fastest time in the Y6 boys run.
Evie B produced a fantastic run to win her heat comfortably with the 7th fastest run for Year 7 girls.
Lachlan H had a really good all round competition finishing in 10th place in the Year 7 boys. Most pupils achieved at least one personal best with many beating both of their best times. This competition is open to all schools in Great Britain and thousands of pupils across the country took part – just to qualify for the finals is a big achievement.

The next qualifier for the 2025 National Championships will be in the Autumn term and all pupils in Years 3 and above are invited to attend – the only requirement is that pupils are able to safely and competently complete the swim distance for their age group. We would love to see teams of 3 qualify for each age group and then pupils have a chance to get on the podium with their school team. Further details will be announced once competition dates are released. On June 9th there is a chance to take part in the National Schools Biathle Championships. It’s in individual school years and is held at Leweston School in Dorset. A biathle is a continuous run-swim-run event (a bit like a triathlon but no bikes) with the swim being held in a swimming pool. We’d love to get as many pupils there as possible (again they must be competent to complete the swim distance). Please email Miss Matson for further information.
