Biography

Lee-Anne Hampson (born 1979) works in a variety of media on the themes of identity and personal experience. Hampson was born in Gravesend, Kent. She initially studied art at the Kent Institute of Art and Design in Rochester, where she was encouraged to study textile art. In 2002 she graduated with a first class degree in Textile Art from Winchester School of Art. Hampson trained at UWE, Bristol for a PGCE in Art and Design. During her first year of teaching she won the prestigious Commonwealth Foundation Arts and Crafts Award 2005. She used the award to travel to Papua New Guinea. She returned to England to work for two years as Artist in Residence at Radley College Oxford. Hampson moved to Plymouth for the next 5 years, where she regularly exhibited work at Kaya Gallery, Barbican, Plymouth, 69 Collective, Totnes and Higher Street Gallery, Dartmouth.

In 2011 she was selected as the artist for the Big Blueprint. This was an exciting and innovative project, which commissioned new art for the south facing side of the Big Screen, in central Plymouth. Plymouth City Council's Arts Unit, Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, The BBC, and The City Centre Company collaborated on the project whose aim was to celebrate Plymouth's ambition for the Olympics and local Olympians, as well as championing and enhancing their cultural offer and local heritage.

Hampson now works as Artist in Residence at Sherfield School, Hampshire, where she also curates the Sherfield Gallery promoting both local and national talent.
