On Tuesday 24th May, Sherfield ran a collaborative Year 9 and 10 STEAM day (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Maths). Students were given an open-idea challenge: to design and make a craft that could safely handle a chemical spill. There were strict parameters: the vehicle had to travel under a low bridge (20cm max height); had to use a motor and a magnet to extract and transport the metal canister of 'chemical waste,' back under the bridge without the students touching it. In addition to researching, designing, building and testing the vehicle, they also had to put their creativity and business skills to the test by designing a logo and name for the vehicle.
The event was a fantastic success, providing a huge variety of solutions to a complex assignment. The project was overseen by Mr. Megaw, Mr. Marshall and Mrs. Barnikel and all three staff members acted as the judging panel at the end of the day. Winners were judged on three criteria: design and build, speed and delivery, branding and aesthetics.
All of the groups communicated well, producing outstanding designs for their products. The STEAM day stretched and challenged all students, testing practical skills and Scientific knowledge, in the quest to meet the stakeholder's requirements. There was a real drive and passion to finish the product, to produce the best possible version of their vehicle. A huge well done to all those involved.
