Year 6 have been learning about ‘Sound’ in Science these last two weeks, including understanding how sound waves travel through air, how amplitude relates to volume and frequency to pitch. In the Prep laboratory, they pumped air from a sealed jar in which a bell was ringing and experienced the sound slowly diminishing - proof that air is required to transmit sound waves. Along with investigating sounds using musical instruments and vibrating varying columns of air to create notes of difference pitch, it has been a very busy time, linking the science of sound to the art of music. This is very much “in tune” with the schools STEAM approach to learning.
