What better way to mark our return to School than to celebrate World Book Day? Last Friday saw a stunning array of costumes as staff and pupils fully entered into the spirit of the event. The week’s House Competition was centred around the fancy dress costumes, with ‘the best dressed’ going through to the final Catwalk Competition. Wynstow was the overall winning House, but closely followed by the other Houses, so creative were all the costumes and so great the effort that had been put into them. Many congratulations to the finalists: from Seniors, Suzi, Bonnie, Alex and Allegra; from Senior Prep, Darcy, Finn, Harry and Tejas; from Junior Prep, Rana, Alara, Connie and Caiden. Well done everyone, and especially to Rana, Fin and Suzi for being the winners in their phase, and to Mrs Hampson from the staff!
Prep School pupils were off timetable for most of the day, and took part in wide range of book-related activities. Junior Prep pupils created 'Supertatos' who battled against the odds to save the vegetables against the evil pea.
Senior Prep pupils tested on their knowledge of books, characters and authors in World Book Day Challenge Quizzes; they brought Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting Rhymes’ to life with their acting skills and then pitted their wits against cryptic clues to get through a Matilda and Big Friendly Giant-inspired Escape Room, before creating animated scenes from their favourite tales, or composing musical theme tunes for books. ‘I can’t draw’ is something many children say – but thanks to inspirational ‘Draw with Rob’ tutorials, some amazing illustrations were produced with pupils pleasantly surprised, if not amazed, by their final pictures!
In addition to all the fun activities run by Sherfield staff, Junior and Senior Prep pupils enjoyed sessions with a visiting author and a book-inspired Dance Workshop which meant that pupils experienced a really enjoyable, action-packed day, making plenty of happy memories – a perfect tonic after so many weeks of being away from school and their friends.

Mr Brain has been reflecting on his favourite childhood book.
Mr Brain's favourite childhood book was ‘The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien.’
‘I was probably about 9 or 10 when I first read it,’ Mr Brain explains. ‘I really enjoyed the character Gollum, and how he pursued Frodo Baggins seeking to acquire the ring. But it’s the wizard Gandalf who stands out in my memory, and how he sought to prevent destruction and support Frodo on his journey through Middle Earth.
‘The films have brought the book to life and I’ve watched these with my sons. I would recommend the book to anyone who enjoys fantasy stories.’
