At Sherfield, we don’t just dress up for World Book Day!
The Nursery children of all ages had a lovely day dressed up as their favourite characters. A very friendly witch came along to the Nursery to read ‘Room on the Broom’ to the children! It was a very exciting story time and all of the children had a little treat afterwards for listening so well and some older children even joined in with the rhyme!
Reception Class shared their chosen storybook with the Pre-Reception children. They retold known stories from their memory and made sense of unknown stories by describing the images. They used their prediction and inference.
Pupils in the Prep School were off timetable for the day, participating in a carousel of exciting activities, ranging from an Alice in Wonderland Escape Room, a Book Scavenger Hunt and a book character-based Art session, to an external Treasure Hunt and a Book Swap.
Pupils in Years 1-6 also took part in a fun-filled Jungle Book Dance Workshop – perfect for those pupils gearing up for the Senior Prep Production of the Jungle Book next term.
The Staff in Wynstow decorated their classroom doors yesterday with book related themes.
As part of their GCSE studies, Senior School pupils were treated to a live Royal Shakespeare Company broadcast of a theatre performance of Macbeth, starring Christopher Eccleston and Niamh Cussack, with an interactive Q & A session with the actors afterwards.
“I think it was a really good modern adaptation on Shakespeare's Macbeth. I really enjoyed how tense it was throughout and I thought Lady Macbeth and the Porter were portrayed really well. I also thought the use of time as a key theme was really interesting. I would definitely watch it again.” Lucy, Year 9
The Sixth Form ran a World Book Day quiz with the younger pupils.
One of the highlights of the day has to be the inter-House Fancy Dress competition, which culminated in a costume Fashion Show for the selected pupils – and staff – to show off their amazing costumes. I don’t think many of us will ever forget the sight of ‘Captain Underpants’ roaring up the catwalk! Congratulations to the two winning ‘Hagrids’ – well done to India and Mr Adams, and to Gabriel for winning the Junior Prep competition as Supertato. Visit our Facebook page to view the video of the Fashion Show.
The staff really pushed the boat out this year with their costumes as well.
It was voted ‘the best World Book Day yet’ – and suggestions are already pouring in for activities for next year!
