This half term the children in Year 1 will be learning all about plastic pollution and the impact it has on our planet’s oceans. In English this week, they have begun a new story called Somebody Swallowed Stanley written by Sarah Roberts. The children used one double-page spread of the book as inspiration for their work. Using puppets of the jellyfish and Stanley, the plastic bag, they interpreted the dangers of plastic in the ocean through the characters’ speech, feelings and actions. They even put on short role-plays acting out their understanding of the scene.
Their Science topic this half term is plants! Many of the pupils have been planting seeds at home and will be observing and recording the growth of their plants over the coming weeks. We cannot wait to see what flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables they produce!
Some of the pupils have been using their time at home to help their parents out in the kitchen and learn new recipes. Arthur has made a delicious cake and Aabha made a tasty chicken curry.
Each day, the children are set daily challenges to promote creativity, movement and engineering. Aabha, Hudson and Franklin made their bedrooms out of Lego. Hudson also built a model of the titanic and Jesse, Vivek and Aabha created excellent sock puppets using craft materials found at home.
