The Senior School gathered to remember the fallen. Indie sang the songs of the Second World War and then Hannah and Max read poetry, all with great sensitivity that highlighted many of the issues of this important day. It was then that the school viewed one of the most remarkable videos about remembrance to have been seen in many years. The video, produced by Mr Kiean Jones, focused on the war-time memories of two staff members, Mrs Jacqueline Voase and Mr Saami Al-Khamiri, who had served in the Seventh Armoured Brigade in Bosnia and in the Royal Engineers in Iraq respectively. They talked movingly about how war and loss affected them and those involved. No one privileged to see this could have any doubt to the reality of war and the sacrifice of untold numbers that made the final sacrifice whilst serving their country.
The Seniors then joined the Prep in front of the school building where the story of Captain J. Aidan Liddell V.C., M.C. and the Liddell family who lived in what is now Sherfield School was explained. The Head Master unveiled a plaque as a permanent tribute to him. After that, the two staff members who had spoken so movingly in the earlier video, accompanied by Cpl Jasper Morgan and Cpl Dan Collier, laid a wreath on behalf of all of the fallen. To complete the ceremony, the Last Post and the Minute’s Silence were observed as a fitting tribute to all who died.We will remember them.
