Sherfield is thrilled to host an exhibition of Mark Michael's exciting and challenging art and we hope you will join us in our gallery on the dates shown above. Mark writes:
As an artist I enjoy observing how the modern world places us within certain situations and how our surroundings and day-to-day life can be depicted through painting. I explore this in my work through the use of symbolism, satire, also adding a little twist of metaphorical lemon. My work is heavily influenced by my training as a sculptor and I use humour and satire to counter-balance often challenging subject matter. I value the titles that I give to my work and regard them as important as my brush strokes.
I incorporate my love of the written word within my paintings experimenting with short sharp phrases, presenting the viewer with an inkling of what may be occurring within my artwork. Ultimately, I enjoy setting up a loose narrative allowing the viewer to move closer to the canvas and say what they see.
I have artwork on display at The Gagliardi Gallery in The King's Road, Chelsea, London and The Jewry Street Gallery in Winchester. I’ve exhibited in both solo and group shows in London and across the South of the UK, including The Strand Gallery, The Lacey Contemporary Gallery, London, The Curious Duke Gallery, London and alongside The Royal Society of Portrait Artists in the WDC. In 2015 I won the Leonardo Award for Best Figurative Work at the Chianciano Biennale in Tuscany. I am also in-house artist and columnist for the satire magazine SMUG.
