On Wednesday 14 Sherfield pupils competed in the ISA National Triathlon at Ipswich High School. All pupils travelled to Ipswich the day before due to an early start and the ever exciting prospect of enjoy time on the M25! I think most people's journeys were between 3 and 4 hours.
A triathlon is a swim-bike-run event where our pupils have had the opportunity to take part in training sessions over the last few weekends and Easter Holidays. There are a lot of extra skills to learn (as well as being able to swim, ride a bike and run) such as racking a bike, putting shoes on whilst dripping wet, finding your spot to re-rack your bike and all as part of the final race time.
Our oldest competitors were first to race in the Tristar 3 age group (13-14 years) with a 300m swim, 4km bike and 2.4km run to complete. Ethan W (Y9) finished in 3rd place with the fastest swim and the 3rd fastest run, Amelie S (Y9) also finished in 3rd place with the 2nd fastest swim and Rhys E (Y8) finished 13th with very fast transitions. Unfortunately the winning boy and the 2nd placed girl didn’t manage to count their laps properly so Amelie and Ethan didn’t get to collect their medals on the day.
Our Tristar 2 age group (11-12 years) athletes were in the biggest race of the day swimming 200m, cycling 3km and running 1.8km. Caiden G (Y7) finished on the podium in 2nd place with the fastest run time. Dylan E (Y6) finished in 7th place with the 4th fastest run time just 6 seconds ahead of Year 5 pupil Luke W in 8th place with the 4th fastest swim time. Siobhan H (Y6) finished in 11th place in the girls race with Evie B (Y7) in 17th. Uri S (Y6) finished in 15th place in the boys race.
In the Tristar 1 age group (9-10 years) they had a 150m swim, 2km bike and 1.2km run. Declan O’C (Y5) had a great swim with the 3rd fastest time with him finishing in 8th place, Chloe VB (Y4) finished in 10th place and Hudson S (Y5) finished in 18th place.
In the Tristar Start age group (8 years) they had a 50m swim followed by an 800m bike and 600m run. Alessandro U (Y3) had an incredible race to record the fastest swim and run times and the 2nd fastest bike time in his age group. This put him on top of the podium as the 2024 National Champion! Laine L (Y3) also raced in this age group producing the 3rd fastest bike time and just missed out on the podium by an amazing 2 seconds! Both boys have never done a triathlon before so to come 1st and 4th is an incredible achievement.
What an amazing set of results from a very talented Sherfield team, I am so very proud of all the children and can’t wait to introduce more pupils to this fun sport.
