On Sunday, Varkey Foundation announced the winner of the Global Teacher Prize 2017: Maggie McDonnell, from Canada.
Maggie has been the first teacher that lived six years in an Inuit village called Salluit, settled beyond the Arctic Circle, made up of just over a thousand people. During this long period, she witnessed many social tragedies such as suicides and gender issues, overcoming them with hard work and determination.
Maggie integrated herself in the small community participating as a teacher, trainer, art director, dietician, case worker, and becoming a role model for all to follow. She commented:
“I think as a teacher in a small Arctic community, your day never ends. The school doors may close – but the relationship with your students is continuous as you share the community with them.”
