We have been preparing the raised beds in the Nursery garden for the children so they can plant out the seeds they have been nurturing indoors. This has been an opportunity to explore mindfulness, practising being in the moment throughout the Early Years, as well as using gardening as a great way to get outside and learn beyond the classroom. The anticipation and patience involved, waiting for the seedlings to appear through the earth and change into recognisable vegetables, fruits or flowers provides so many learning opportunities.
Together we have been sharing our gardening knowledge and learning about what helps seeds grow – sun, water and soil with a little bit of love too! We are looking forward to the moment when we can taste what we have been growing with the children and see our sunflowers growing tall.
We have also been learning about mini beasts. Whilst digging the raised beds and caring for the plants, we have encountered all sorts of exciting creatures including snails, worms and centipedes. Our setting at Sherfield is a wonderful environment in which to explore and share these experiences.
