In May, Sherfield pupils from Years 8 to 10 experienced a fascinating tour of World War One battlefields in Belgium. On the first day in Ypres they learned about the causes of the war and the reasons for trench warfare, before attending the last post ceremony at the Menin Gate where pupils laid a wreath. On day two they retraced the footsteps of soldiers who went ‘over the top’ on the first day of the Somme, and on the last day pupils heard the stories of men who had been court-martialed, visited the German cemetery at Langemarck and learned about the Battle of Passchendaele. It was a hugely poignant and informative trip. Thanks to our brilliant guides, pupils gained an invaluable insight into the war and the lives of the men who fought in it.
